Slashing swords, glimmering castles, beasts of epic proportions. All ideas one thinks of when someone asks, what does a geek love? Of course this is completely true, especially for this guy, but my god does this just hit the tip of the geekburg! For a lot of people, it means someone who obsesses over a media of fantasy or sci fi, not living in the “real world”. This depicts geeks as a minority of people who are out of touch with reality with their Star Trek: TNG posters, Middle Earth maps and multiple copies of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition. What people fail to understand is, Everyone’s a geek, in their own way and most just don’t know it.
So What’s a Geek?
I’ll start this by saying that I am completely making this up but hey so is every other definition. To me it’s simply someone that is passionate about a particular topic, genre, or aspect of life. Ever see a Buffalo Bills fan, dressed like any good LARPer would, sent through a plastic table before a game? They’re a geek. Ever see someone spend hours on end in their garden day after day? They’re a geek. How bout someone that could recite to you all the lyrics of every Kendrick Lamar song? You guessed it, they’re a geek too. See geeks have usually been reduced to sci fi fantasy “weird shit”, but this just ain’t true. Geeks, just like the many elves in Tolkien’s lore, come in all varieties.
Geeks Rule
Geeks have come along way. Far more people now are accepting of geeks and geek culture, but some still feel alone. I want this to go out to those of you who may feel this way. Being a geek is absolutely amazing, and so are you. Playing D&D, having movie marathons, fantasy book clubs, or nights of board game shenanigans is so much fun. Never be ashamed of doing what you love with those you love. And for those of you who are still trying to find your people, I say, embrace you, be kind and those people will find you.
If you made it this far, I thank you for being here and I wish you the best. All comments are welcome below, enjoy the Haven Geeks!
